Hearing tests can be beneficial for almost anyone. However, there are certain groups of people who have a higher need to take hearing tests. If you are in one of these groups, then you should strongly consider having your hearing tested. Here is a list of groups of people who should take hearing tests.

1. People over age 65

Elderly people are at a much higher risk of having hearing loss. This is because hearing loss can accumulate gradually over time. So, people who have lived six or seven decade’s worth of life simply tend to have been exposed to more loud noises, ear infections and other things that can lead to hearing loss. If you are over age 65, then you should definitely consider getting your hearing tested to see whether or not you need hearing aids.

2. Soldiers

Soldiers, especially ones returning from war, are at a higher risk of hearing loss than the average person. This is because gunfire and explosions which soldiers are often exposed to can create hearing loss. If you have recently been in an active combat zone and have not had your hearing tested, then it could be very wise to do so.

3. Children

It is important for children to have their hearing tested because the earlier in life that hearing impairments are discovered, the earlier successful interventions can be made. Your child may have hearing loss and you may not be aware of it, and he or she may not be aware of it either. Hearing loss can lead to learning issues and other developmental problems if it goes unchecked. However, if it is discovered in a hearing test, then hearing aids or other solutions can be given to the child. This can be tremendously helpful.

4. Musicians

Musicians, and especially rock, metal or other musicians who tend to play their instruments loudly, can be at a higher risk for hearing loss. In fact, some of the most famous rock musicians such as Pete Townsend (the Who), Noel Gallagher (Oasis) and Chris Martin (Coldplay) have either hearing loss or tinnitus. So, if you are a musician, it may be worth your while to get a hearing test.

If you’re concerned you may be suffering from hearing loss, tinnitus or another auditory issue, contact an audiologist in your area and book an appointment. The audiologist will be able to conduct tests to determine if you’re suffering from an issue with your auditory system, in addition to recommending the proper treatment.
